Why Get a Running Coach

Getting a coach is a fundamental step for any athlete when he or she really wants to get serious about training. The necessity of this support applies regardless of the ultimate goal or level of competition. Whether you are trying to qualify for Boston or break a long-standing personal best, having a personal coach is a decisive, and easy, first step towards achieving your dreams.

  • Objectivity and Planning – One of the unique perks of having a coach is access to an objective and knowledgeable opinion on when to go hard and when to go easy. Athletes, especially distance runners, tend to push themselves too hard and often end up injured or over-trained. However, as your coach I will help you to see the big picture during a training segment: recovery is just as integral as hard workouts. It’s nearly impossible to find this balance alone.
  • Customized Schedule - Don’t try and fit your schedule around a training plan, let me design a running plan that fits your schedule. You’re not a cardboard cutout or one-size-fits-all runner. You are unique and so aren’t your time commitments, running background, injury history, and goals. Don’t settle for a carbon copy training plan; give yourself a running schedule that is designed specifically for you.
  • Make improving easy – I take the guesswork out of training by giving you a customized schedule that is guaranteed to make you run faster. No more waking up and wondering what you should run for the day. No more wasted time deciding if you should do a workout or when to schedule a long run. You can rest assured knowing that you have the absolute best running schedule created just for you.
  • Accountability – It’s important to stay focused when training for your goal race. Work, family, weather, sickness – they can all lead to interruptions in your running or a lack of motivation to get out the door. With me as your coach, you’ll be fired up for every run, workout, and race.
  • Plateau busting – It’s easy to get stuck in a rut with your training; most self-coached runners only do what is fun. Or, perhaps you’ve been running for a few years but can’t manage to conquer that one goal. With me as your coach, you can be assured that your training will never become monotonous; you will always be improving – season to season, month-to-month; and you will take your PR’s to a whole new level.
  • Support – Let’s be honest, running is a somewhat solitary sport. However, when things don’t go as planned or you have a disappointing workout, I’ll be there to give you a pat on the back, provide an objective outlook, and steer you in the right direction.
  • Answers to your questions – Whether you are new to the sport or you have been running for years, you’ve got questions. More importantly, I’ve got the answers. You don’t have to go searching Google, rifling through running books on Amazon, or scouring message boards for answers to your problems. All of your running and training questions can be answered quickly, easily, and with applicable connections to your training.
  • Feedback – With a suite of online training tools, providing feedback is easy. With email, phone, texts, and a variety of running logs at your disposal, I am able to give you feedback on all of your running workouts and make adjustments as needed.
  • Injury Prevention – I carefully monitor your progress and can recognize when you begin to show signs of fatigue from overtraining, which is often the main precursor to injury. I always look at your training log after a hard workout so I can determine if you need more recovery or if you’re ready to hit the next workout; whereas an un-coached athlete might plunge ahead, digging themselves deeper into a hold of overtraining and mediocre results.
